Best of Sons of Hawaii

The award-winning performers in this legendary band were pioneers in Hawai‘i’s cultural revival. For five decades they have continued to celebrate a vibrant musical tradition. Now for the first time, their distinctive sound is being released on compact disc. Included here are original tunes by guitarists, Rev. Dennis D. Kamakahi, one of our most gifted contemporary composers, as well as the hauntingly beautiful classic, Morning Dew, by Eddie Kamae and Larry Kimura. With memorable songs, inspired arrangements, skilled musicianship, and heartful voices – here is Hawaiian music at its very best!

Christmas Time with Eddie Kamae and The Sons of Hawaii

Like previous Sons of Hawai‘i recordings, this CD includes the talents of both the Sons and special guest artists. You’ll hear ‘ukulele virtuoso Eddie Kamae, leader of the Sons and well-known for his compositions, research of old songs, and his singing of both the old and new. Eddie and his wife, Myrna, put their talents together as composers and lyricists to produce Christmas Long Ago; I love Christmas; Remember Me Santa; and It’s Christmas Time, I know. Rev. Dennis Kamakahi’s compositions, especially for this Christmas CD, include Christmas Memories and Dear St. Nick. Joe Marshall, a musician’s musician and the Sons’ singing emcee and bass player; David “Feet” Rogers regarded by many as the finest steel guitar player in Hawai‘i, and Diana Aki’s beautiful Hawaiian voice.

Eddie Kamae Sons of Hawaii

These twelve songs have been gathered to accompany the publication of the book HAWAIIAN SON: The Life and Music of Eddie Kamae. Selected from classic albums recorded by The Sons of Hawai‘i, they represent the music that has shaped Eddie’s fifty-year career as singer, composer, arranger, band leader, and ‘ukulele virtuoso. Several, for example, were composed by Queen Liliuokalani, who first inspired him. Ke Ala a Ka Jeep was written with his influential teacher, Mary Kawena Pukui, after a historic pilgrimage to the Big Island’s South Point in 1969. Wapi‘o Valley Song was written with his spiritual father, Sam Li‘a Kalainaina, to commemorate a visit to Sam’s birthplace in 1969, a trip that would take Eddie to the source of Hawaiian music.
